Gun violence in the US varies by state. The above visualization (click on it to interact and view data) shows a breakdown of gun violence by state. States in the southeast United States were overall above average when it comes to gun violence, Louisiana being the most violent state as a statistical outlier.

Most of the states with higher rates of gun violence have more populated areas, tighter quarters, poorer communities, and looser gun control laws. Some states such as California or New York that have very high populations of people do not have too high of a rate of gun violence, especially compared to how the media portrays cities like Los Angeles and New York City.
